Schamrock-Festival 2026 - Editorial (scroll for english version)
The poem is the sacred place cleared by the poets effort for another mind to enter –
Unser Motto Conference of the Birds II klingt leise melancholisch und zugleich erfrischend und kämpferisch.

Schamrock-Festival 2026 - Editorial
The poem is the sacred place cleared by the poets effort for another mind to enter –
writes the Greek-American poet Eleni Sikelianos, a companion of Anne Waldman, Alice Notley, Allen Ginsberg, and Amiri Baraka.
Poets have long known that the sources of their work can be mysterious. Writing poems is often an aleatory process, meaning it depends on chance, and every outcome remains uncertain until the poem is finished. Poets are also, among other things, ambassadors for the entire field of poetry and translation. We are not only individual artists but also representatives of this larger whole: poetry.
And I am delighted to be able to draw renewed attention to poetry, here and today, through the Schamrock-Festival of Women Poets 2026.
Our motto, Conference of the Birds II, sounds quietly melancholic and yet refreshing and defiant at once. We continue to be shaken by the wars in Ukraine, the Middle East, Iran, and many other flashpoints. We are confronted with antisemitism and racism. The climate crisis, the greatest threat of our time, and the concern for endangered species, ourselves included, sometimes leave us speechless, and yet they drive us to respond with art and poetry.
The Schamrock-Festival is built on encounter, conversation, listening, and cooperation. One example is our partnership in the Creative Europe project EPESEP: Equal Pay, Equal Show, Equal Pension, addressing the situation of women in the literary world. We will present some of its results.
Once again, poets and musicians from around the world are guests here in Munich. Poetry/music duos and focus programs on artists from Catalonia, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and PEN’s Writers in Exile program are all part of the lineup, as is the presentation of the legendary Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics. With two workshops for teenagers, we also look to the future. And, we are especially looking forward to the closing concert with Limpe Fuchs. In honor of her 85th birthday, she will present the world premiere of a work commissioned by Schamrock.
Still the only festival for women poets worldwide, Schamrock is a Munich success story, strengthened by the rich response from poets, audiences, funders, and press from around the world. In 2021, Schamrock was honored with the Anita Augspurg Prize of the City of Munich, and in 2022 Augusta Laar received the Bavarian Culture Prize (Kulturpreis Bayern) for her artistic work.
Our thanks go first of all to the Department of Arts and Culture of the City of Munich, which has supported the Schamrock Festival from the very beginning, and in particular to the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts, an essential funder, as well as to more than 30 cultural and literary institutions from 20 countries that support us both morally and financially.
Enjoy the abundance, diversity, and power of poetry and the encounters with artists and fellow visitors, and celebrate with us a brilliant festival of women poets.
Tickets will be available through MünchenTicket, online or at advance sales outlets (advance sales begin October 19), or at the box office at Einstein Kultur.
